The "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" Story

"One Size Fits All deserves an award for sheer range of creative experimentation. Judging from the ALO's infectious positivity and their irrefutable soul and jazz talents, the foursome may be a band to look out for as they mature musically."

-Beth Rose Middleton, California Aggie Online, Davis, CA 11/3/99

We were scheduled to record the soundtrack for Matt Powers’ new philm, One Size Fits All, on January 24, 1999. Matt’s main request was that the music be funky. Normally this would not have been a problem, but at the time we were drummerless and as you all know funk without a drummer is like polka without an accordion. As we approached the recording date, attempts were made to secure a drummer for the session but by January 21st, we were still unsuccessful.

On January 22, we got a call from Shree Shyam Das. We had met and jammed with Shyam about a month earlier, but we had not heard from him since. Shyam agreed to the project. On the 23rd we rehearsed and on the 24th we recorded.

The music was primarily improvised, minus a few chord charts and some loose concepts and due to our limited budget there were almost no second takes. As a result, the tracks have a wonderful rawness and sense of adventure to them that is characteristic of live recordings. For the most part, most what you hear is exactly what happened the first time we played it.

Thank you for listening, Sincerely, Ernesto Fealdt
